DIY Cat Wand

Create a Purr-fect Toy for Your Feline Friend

Materials Needed:

  1. Wooden dowel (approx. 12-18 inches long)

  2. String or thin rope (2-3 feet)

  3. Scissors

  4. Feathers (craft feathers or natural feathers)

  5. Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Optional:

  1. Fabric or ribbon scraps

  2. Felt or foam sheets

  3. Small carabiner or key ring

  4. Small bell

  5. Drill with a small bit (optional)

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Wooden Dowel

If your wooden dowel is longer than desired, use the scissors or a saw to trim it to the desired length, usually between 12 to 18 inches.

Step 2: Add a Bell to the Dowel

Towards one end of the dowel, drill a small hole if you have a drill. Alternatively, you can carefully twist the tip of the scissors into the wood to create a small hole. Attach the bell to the hole using the string, ensuring it's securely tied.

Step 3: Attach the Feathers

Take the feathers and arrange them together in a fan shape. Apply a small amount of hot glue to the base of the feathers and press them onto the dowel just below the bell. Hold them in place until the glue is set.

Step 4: Create Ribbon or Fabric Streamers

Cut several pieces of ribbon or fabric scraps into varying lengths, ranging from 6 to 12 inches. Glue these pieces around the dowel just below the feathers. This will create additional visual stimuli for your cat.

Step 5: Wrap the Dowel Handle

Wrap the handle of the dowel with fabric, ribbon, or twine. This not only adds a decorative touch but also provides a comfortable grip for you.

Step 6: Make a Fabric or Felt Base for the Bell

Cut a small square or circle from a felt or foam sheet. Glue it to the dowel just below the bell, covering the knot and securing it in place.

Step 7: Attach a Carabiner or Key Ring

At the opposite end of the dowel from the feathers, attach a small carabiner or key ring. This will be the point where you connect the string.

Step 8: Attach String to the Carabiner or Key Ring

Cut a length of string or thin rope (approximately 2-3 feet) and tie one end securely to the carabiner or key ring.

Step 9: Playtime!

Wave the cat wand in front of your feline friend, allowing them to chase and pounce on the feathers. The bell will add an enticing jingle, making it even more appealing. Make sure to supervise your cat during playtime and store the wand in a safe place when not in use.
