Combs
The basis of quality grooming starts with appropriate tools. Cat coats don't use brushes, contrary to popular belief... but instead utilize combs.
However, different combs work differently for different area's of the coat. Check out these differences below:
General Body Combs
Goal:
Loosen and detangle large swatches of fur. Finds tangles easily.
-
Fine & Coarse tine spacing.
-
For large areas like the back, belly and tail.
-
Cheaper combs have too wide of a spacing to have any deshed grip, but can find tangles and matting.
-
A higher quality comb will have a distinct difference in tine spacing to do both slight deshed and finding tangles and matting.
Face/Feet Combs
Goal:
Loosen and detangle densely packed fur and tight areas.
-
Tightly spaced tines
-
Short tine lengths
-
For tight areas of coat growth typically with dense areas of fur
-
This is ideal locations such as the crown of the head, the most forehead portion of the face, dense feet fur, and especially front legs.
DeShedding Combs
Goal:
Loosens and removes already dead blown coat that's trapped.
-
Tightly spaced, often staggered tine design.
-
Designed to offer ''drag'' through the coat at the surface of the skin and the coat at the same time.
-
Removes dead blown coat that's trapped in the coat still.
General Body Combs:
Everyday combs are distinctly for grooming the coat while dirty or clean. The ideal comb doesn't create too much drag through the coat as you work through it

Face & Feet Combs:
Face & Feet combs are distinctly for grooming a dense coat, preferably while clean, but possible while dirty. The ideal comb has tight enough spacing to really get into dense areas of the coat like the crown of the head, down densely packed legs and over the top of paws.

DeShedding Combs:
DeShedding combs are a very distinct kind of comb, often with staggered teeth that help pull undercoat, up and out of the coat as you brush the cat. The biggest issue we see is cats getting reactive to this process when an owner tries to utilize this tight spacing on a dirty coat which has a lot more drag to it. We recommend using this kind of comb only on a clean coat when possible.

Now all that said. IF you struggle to comb area's of your cat or they get too feisty for you to feel confident handling, here are a couple of additional tools to help you during the process.
Disclaimer, these are some of the very few tools we sell, however it's only because we believe in them so much! We decided long ago we would only carry products we ourselves would use here at Sweet Whiskers... and these three make the cut for grooming tools!
